LA Galaxy v New York City FC – live! | LA Galaxy v New York City FC – live! |
(35 minutes later) | |
3.54pm ET20:54 | |
33 min: Big save from Saunders. Diserkud gives it away really sloppily, and Giovani is suddenly in: unfortunately for LA, though, it’s on his right foot, and although he hit it well, it was straight at the goalie. Corner. It’s cleared.
3.52pm ET20:52 | |
30 min: A rare excursion for NYC, and they force a corner. Pirlo’s ball in is headed clear by Gerrard.
3.51pm ET20:51 | |
29 min: LA are on top here. And they have the ball in the net – but it’s ruled offside. Lletget mad a fool out of Hernandez, and lobbed it up for Giovani, whose header was saved, but it fell to Lletget, and he tapped home. He was offside, though: it was the right call. The Galaxy look much better now: NYC can’t get the ball.
3.47pm ET20:47 | |
26 min: It’s about 81F in LA, and the game is being played accordingly. Not too much harebrained running around. Rogers overlaps for LA down the left, and Lletget tries to chip Saunders … tipped over! Great save. And NYC escape from the corner – Keane hits the bar! Saunders flapped at a cross, Keane smashed it from close range, and it hit the underside of the bar and bounced out. So unlucky.
3.45pm ET20:45 | |
23 min: Gerrard has been quiet. As has Robbie Keane, that chance aside. Lletget is fouled by Iraola down the right, and Omar Gonzalez does very well to reach the ball in and keep it in play. Then Gerrard delivers a characteristically excellent cross from deep, but NYC defend it well.

3.41pm ET20:41 | |
20 min: Better from LA, and Zardes looks a threat down the right.
Here’s Steven Gerrard doing some warm-ups:
3.39pm ET20:39 | |
18 min: That was a great chance. Keane struck it well, and Hernandez didn’t know anything about it. Off his heel and just wide. Nothing comes from the corner, though.
3.39pm ET20:39 | |
17 min: Oh, what a chance for LA! Bad giveaway from Pirlo, and Zardes goes down the right. His pull-back is accurate, and Keane hits it … but it’s off Hernandez and behind!
3.38pm ET20:38 | |
14 min: McNamara, who always looks knackered even in the opening 10 minutes, goes down the left. It’s cleared, but then Villa with a shot from outside the box – and Ricketts is down to save well.
“Very few players can play with a cigar and a Martini in one hand, but Pirlo is one of them,” says Taylor Twellman on commentary. Carlton Palmer?
3.32pm ET20:32 | |
12 min: David Villa has been really threatening, and that’s a lovely touch from a pass from Poku that was way too heavy. He can’t pick out a team-mate from the left flank, unfortunately, but New York are really on top.
3.30pm ET20:30 | |
9 min: New York have started better, and Pirlo has been much involved. LA Galaxy haven’t seen much of the ball.
3.28pm ET20:28 | |
8 min: Villa with a shot on the turn from the corner! It wasn’t a very good ball in from Pirlo, but Gerrard fell over, and Villa spun and fired, and it was deflected wide. Another corner, but this time Galaxy clear.
3.27pm ET20:27 | |
7 min: Now Poku at the other end, after good combination play from David Villa. Corner, and though the first ball in is crap, it’s gone behind for another one.
3.27pm ET20:27 | |
6 min: First bit of good play by Galaxy, and first test for Josh Saunders: a fizzer from 18 yards from Giovani. Straight at the keeper.
3.24pm ET20:24 | |
4 min: Pirlo steps away from Gerrard and looks for David Villa over the top. Villa pulls away from the defence in the inside-left channel, and gets on the end of it, but his shot is weak, and saved by Ricketts. Good play, though.
Interestingly, Juventus kicked off in Serie A this weekend, and in their first season without Pirlo since 2012, lost 1-0 at home to Udinese. Bring him back!
Updated at 3.26pm ET | |
3.22pm ET20:22 | |
2 min: Lots of ticker-tape in Carson. Pirlo looks wide for Iraola. Iraola’s ball in is cleared.

FYI, the players aren’t out yet. They do this a lot in MLS – advertise a kick-off for a certain time, and then pay little heed to it. It’s annoying, and I can’t abide it! | FYI, the players aren’t out yet. They do this a lot in MLS – advertise a kick-off for a certain time, and then pay little heed to it. This is a nice piece by Jeff Carlisle on ESPN on whether this LA-NYC game is too star-centric. The answer, of course, is yes. | This is a nice piece by Jeff Carlisle on ESPN on whether this LA-NYC game is too star-centric. The answer, of course, is yes. |

Hello and welcome | Hello and welcome |
Typical, isn’t it? You spend ages hyping up a contest between two of MLS’s biggest stars – and then one of them can’t play. Forget “the British invasion”, “the Battle of Britain”, and other such cliches: Frank Lampard is injured, and won’t be featuring in today’s game against the Galaxy. He’s not even in NYC’s 18. Oh well. There are plenty of other good players out there, so let’s not worry too much. Kick off’s at 3pm ET, 12pm PT, 8pm BST. Join us! | Typical, isn’t it?
