In his survey of “overlooked” women photographers, William Boyd (Review, 22 August) overlooked Helen Muspratt (1905-2001), a most notable British photographer in the interwar years, whose work encompassed innovative boldness with solarisation and multiple exposure, exquisite formal simplicity, and documentary reportage from the Soviet Union and Welsh coalfields. This omission will hopefully be rectified with the forthcoming publication (from Manchester University Press) of Face: Shape and Angle, by Muspratt’s daughter Jessica Sutcliffe.Jan Marsh London |
