South Africa: Pistorius Meant to Shoot His Girlfriend, Her Parents Assert
Version 0 of 1. Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend deliberately, her parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, said in their first public comments against a South African court ruling in her killing. Mr. Pistorius, a Paralympic gold medalist, was found guilty of culpable homicide, the equivalent of manslaughter, last September in the death of Reeva Steenkamp, a model. Prosecutors are seeking to overturn the ruling that Mr. Pistorius was not guilty of murder. “What actually came out in court is not the truth,” Mr. Steenkamp told Australia’s Channel Seven television in an interview shown Sunday. “He got angry, she went off to the toilet, locked herself inside, and then him pulling out the gun and shooting.” Mr. Pistorius, who was due to be released from prison last Friday after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence, has said he believed an intruder was in his house. His release was returned to the parole board for reconsideration after South Africa’s justice minister intervened, and the appeal hearing is set for November. |
