Preacher Anjem Choudary due to face court on terror charge

The radical preacher Anjem Choudary is due to appear before London’s Old Bailey accused of encouraging support for Islamic State on social media.

The 48-year-old was arrested by Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism command last year and charged this month. It is alleged that between 29 June last year and 6 March this year, Choudary invited support for Isis, contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

A second man, Mohammed Rahman, 32, of Whitechapel, is also accused of inviting support for Isis over the same dates. Both men are in custody and are expected to appear before Mr Justice Saunders at London’s central criminal court via videolink from 10.30am on Friday.
