An attack involving a plank of wood after the funeral of a criminal once dubbed Salford's Mr Big is being investigated by police.

On Friday, hundreds of people gathered for the funeral of security boss Paul Massey.

The 55-year-old was shot by a masked gunman at his home in Clifton, Salford, last month.

As mourners left Agecroft Cemetery, a 49-year-old man was struck on the head with a plank of wood.

Supt Mark Kenny, of Greater Manchester Police, urged criminal gangs "not to take action into their own hands".

The injured man is in a stable condition at Salford Royal Infirmary but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
