A three-year-old boy is dead and his parents and two siblings are in hospital after a unit fire at Beenleigh, south of Brisbane.

Emergency crews were unable to revive the little boy at the home late on Sunday night. The boy’s parents and four-year-old brother were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, along with his one-year-old sister.

Investigators will begin combing through the charred remains of the unit on Monday, searching for the cause of the blaze.

Police Inspector Tracy Dale’s voice cracked as she told reporters there was nothing that could be done for the youngest boy. “Very sadly a three-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene,” she said.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said the two injured children had been taken to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. She said a total of four adults had also been taken to various hospitals. All were suffering from burns and/or smoke inhalation.

It was not clear who the other two adult patients were, but the fire brigade said they were not firefighters.

Ambulance service spokesman Os Culic later said they were people who had tried to save the family from the blaze. “They received traumatic injuries as a result of their efforts to rescue people from inside the residence,” he said.
