First Great Western rail services will return to normal on Tuesday after a weekend of disruption because of a strike over new trains.

Members of the RMT union walked out during the bank holiday weekend, mounting picket lines at stations including London Paddington, Reading, Plymouth and Cardiff.

The union said the stoppage had been solidly supported and warned of further action if the deadlocked row was not resolved.

RMT is in dispute over plans to remove guards from new high-speed trains as well as changes to catering services. The company says no one will lose their job and the new trains will be quicker and offer a better service to passengers.

A number of services were cancelled over the weekend or finished earlier than usual because of the strike.
