Two senior members of an ultranationalist party were charged by the authorities on Friday for their involvement in violent clashes this week in Kiev, the capital, in which three police officers were killed. The party members — Igor Shvayka, a former agriculture minister, and Yuriy Syrotyuk, a former lawmaker — were charged with “participating in mass disorder,” an Interior Ministry spokesman said. The men are senior representatives of Svoboda, a far-right, anti-Russian party whose members are battling Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine. Violent clashes broke out between nationalists and the police near Ukraine’s Parliament on Monday, when lawmakers gave preliminary backing to contentious constitutional amendments that grant greater autonomy to pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
