Spain: Prime Minister Supports E.U. Reforms Sought by Britain
Version 0 of 1. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of Spain gave support Friday to a campaign by Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain to press for structural changes in the European Union, saying that a British exit from the bloc would be unthinkable. Mr. Cameron has said he wants Britain to remain in the European Union, but that he wants to obtain changes that would enable him to recommend a yes vote in a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the bloc. He has promised to hold a referendum by the end of 2017. Among the reforms he is seeking are tighter restrictions on migrants’ access to welfare benefits, reductions in regulations, and increased free trade. Mr. Rajoy said at a joint news conference with Mr. Cameron that Spain would “do everything in its power for things to go well” in the coming negotiations over the union’s future. “It would be unthinkable and a step backwards, that I don’t want to even think about, if the United Kingdom were not in the E.U.,” he said. |
