Former Sydney bikie boss Sam Ibrahim is facing deportation back to Lebanon. The immigration minister, Peter Dutton, is said to have cancelled his Australian visa on grounds of bad character.

Fairfax Media is reporting Ibrahim will appeal the deportation order, according to his barrister Julieanne Levick.

“I need to know on what basis they propose to deport him, on what statutes they propose to rely, but certainly we will be appealing, there’s no doubt about that,” she told Fairfax.

A spokesman for Dutton said his office could not comment on individual cases.

Ibrahim, who has been in jail since April charged with running a guns racket, has 28 days to appeal against the minister’s decision.

Dutton said protecting the Australian community was a government priority.

“We won’t tolerate people coming to our country and thinking they can commit serious crime and remain here,” he said in a statement.

“If they’re here on a visa and involved in criminal activity, we will act to remove them and eliminate the threat they pose to that community.”

Ibrahim, the former Parramatta chapter president of the Nomads outlaw motorcycle gang, was born in Lebanon and came to Australia as a child.
