Government’s energy policies are just blowing in the wind

http://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2015/sep/06/green-energy-wind-solar-power-fracking-goverment-policy

Version 0 of 1.

Huw Rowlands (Letters) goes too far when he says: “Anyone who has researched the fracking industry is against it.”

His assertion ignores a large body of research into fracking that has been and continues to be undertaken by the geological community, including the Earth sciences departments of several of our finest universities. If Mr Rowlands were to discuss the matter with a cross-section of the geophysicists, hydrologists and environmental scientists who work on this subject he would find a wide range of opinions.

Mr Rowlands ought to consider that no extraction of oil or gas could take place anywhere, on land or under the sea, without the involvement of geologists and hydrologists. It is personally offensive to such people to assert, or even imply, that they don’t care about any risks involved.Philip L MorganGorslas

Don’t keep the change

I read of more woes about restaurant tipping. It is disgraceful that staff are asked to give money to their employers but why is it customary to give a tip in the first place?

I have never worked in a restaurant but I did work as a shop assistant and I spent as much time and effort helping customers as a waiter would. Why can’t the menu prices and the staff wages be raised by say 12% or 15% (whatever amounts to a fair tip) and tips be eliminated? A bonus would be a tiny saving in ink wasted on the curious statement so commonly seen on menus and yet so rarely seen on the printed matter provided by any other industry: “Service not included.”Paul DenisonPoole

The role of the church in death

It is not surprising the Pop-Up Death Cafe was a success in Malvern, Worcestershire (“Anyone for tea and sympathy? Death cafes embrace last taboo”, News).

I understand that this community has one of the oldest populations in Britain. There are growing churches there too, though. And some of them run permanent cafes, where people can discuss all the topics you reported. As a Christian minister, I regularly overhear and engage in such conversations. The “agenda” we have is hospitality, usually offered by volunteers, rather than religious professionals.

In August, I arranged five funerals. My colleagues and I expect to incorporate the loving contributions of family, and often the deceased person’s express instructions, with regard to hymns, prayers, poems and music and the display of photos and memorabilia. We use key components from the Bible alongside what has been helpful in our own experience. Christian funerals are becoming more diverse.

I welcome and encourage a spirit of openness about death, but it would be unwise to overlook the continuing contribution of pastoral ministry by Christian congregations. Rev Helen CaineSuperintendent minister

And before Tessa, there was...

I was close to choking on my cornflakes when I read Toby Helm’s description of aspiring Labour candidate for London mayor Tessa Jowell as “... arguably the most powerful woman [Labour] has ever produced” (Interview). Has he forgotten Barbara Castle?

UK must do more for refugees

We the undersigned are dedicated to creating a socially just world. Among our number are many leading experts on community cohesion, asylum, refugees, migration and law. We believe the government’s current position on the European refugee and migration crisis is misguided and requires urgent change.

Britain has a long and proud tradition of providing sanctuary to those in need. The prime minister and home secretary do not need to look far to find the beneficiaries of this proud tradition. Some sit on the benches of theCommons and the Lords; some are famous on the national and international stage; others quietly contribute to British society and build lives for themselves and their families. All of them owe everything to the principled generosity of past prime ministers. That generosity is urgently needed again now.

The prime minister is right to point to our significant financial contribution to help the governments of Syria, Lebanon and Turkey cope with the regional refugee crisis.

Yet on the urgent issue of providing sanctuary to those who have arrived in Europe, it is clear we are failing to do our part. We have accepted only a handful of refugees and have contributed next to nothing to the co-ordinated European response. For every refugee we accept, Germany accepts 35.

The chorus calling for greater action is growing rapidly and crosses all traditional party lines. The current government position is bad policy. We urge the government to increase our commitment to give sanctuary to those in urgent need on Europe’s borders. We can do more. We should do more.
