A Pakistani technician was killed and a driver wounded in an attack on their Geo TV broadcasting van in Karachi on Tuesday, according to a Dawn News report.

Arshad Ali Jafri was shot seven times in the attack by gunmen on motorcycles. The driver, who was shot twice, managed to drive to a hospital. Two other Geo media staff near the parked van escaped injury.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the privately owned Geo TV, which has been regularly threatened and harassed by extremist groups as well as Pakistani authorities.

The attack was similar to one on an Express TV van in Karachi in January 2014 in which three media workers were killed. No arrests have since been made.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called for a proper investigation into the Geo TV attack. “Condemnation of today’s violence by government officials will ring hollow unless the perpetrators of this crime are brought to justice,” said Bob Dietz, CPJ’s Asia programme coordinator.

“If the government of prime minister Nawaz Sharif is ever going to establish its credibility as a protector of journalists, now is the time.”
