Breakfast is the cheapest it’s been in five years.

The cost of the most important meal of the day is falling thanks to good weather and plentiful supply of crops. The cheap oil price and strong dollar has made it cheaper to trade and transport the food on the table.

Orange juice, milk, wheat (in toast), pork, sugar and coffee is on average at its cheapest point since 2010, according to the Financial Times, which has come up with its own breakfast index to calculate a simple average of the price of these breakfast foods.

The cost of pork is down 16 per cent this year, while wheat is down 23 per cent and sugar 22 per cent. Coffee drinkers are benefitting more than tea-drinkers: the cost of coffee has fallen 28 per cent because of the weak Brazilian currency and strong Colombian supply, while tea has risen by 67 per cent because of a severe drought.

Falling food prices are evidence of excess global crops. While it’s good news for those who like a full English, farmers are less pleased. Desperate milk farmers have taken to Brussels this week to protest the pressure they are under from falling milk prices as the oversupply takes its toll.
