The international break is finally over and America’s best and brightest exports are returning to their respective European clubs. Some are looking to put the embarrassment of the 4-1 loss to Brazil behind them, others are simply hoping to impress Jürgen Klinsmann enough to be considered ahead of the much-anticipated Confederation Cup playoffs against Mexico next month. Regardless, the Yanks are back on the old continent, here’s the second edition of the Yanks Abroad Power Index. The international break is finally over and America’s best and brightest exports are returning to their respective European clubs. 1) Geoff Cameron, Stoke City (Premier League). Last month: 2nd1) Geoff Cameron, Stoke City (Premier League). Last month: 2nd
Dominant in the air, and no-nonsense on the ground, Cameron has been the very definition of solid this campaign. He with his positioning a few weeks ago at Tottenham but his heroic performance in a 1-0 loss to West Brom, a game in which Stoke were down to nine men, was superb. Cameron even scored the winning penalty a few weeks ago in the Capital One Cup shootout against Luton Town.Dominant in the air, and no-nonsense on the ground, Cameron has been the very definition of solid this campaign. 2) Tim Howard, Everton (Premier League). Last month: 6th2) Tim Howard, Everton (Premier League). Last month: 6th
Back in the national team fold after his one-year sabbatical, Howard has seemingly put last season’s regression behind him as well returning to top form for Everton. He kept a clean sheet against Southampton, producing an excellent save against Sadio Mané just before Everton scores the winning goal. A week later against Manchester City his inability to cover the near post was again exposed but he was excellent in his last game before the international break, making three fantastic saves to preserve the clean sheet for Everton in their 0-0 draw with Tottenham.Back in the national team fold after his one-year sabbatical, Howard has seemingly put last season’s regression behind him as well returning to top form for Everton. 3) Fabian Johnson, Borussia Mönchengladbach (Bundesliga). Last month: 1st3) Fabian Johnson, Borussia Mönchengladbach (Bundesliga). Last month: 1st
Johnson unfortunately suffered a torn calf muscle in Monchengladbach’s opening day loss to Borussia Dortmund; he’ll be out for several weeks. After an impressive campaign last season Mönchengladbach sit bottom of the table losing all three of their matches thus far. To add insult to injury, they have also been drawn into the “Group of Death” in the Champions League, where they will face Juventus, Sevilla and Manchester City.Johnson unfortunately suffered a torn calf muscle in Monchengladbach’s opening day loss to Borussia Dortmund; he’ll be out for several weeks. 4) Aron Johannsson, Werder Bremen (Bundesliga). Last month: 4th4) Aron Johannsson, Werder Bremen (Bundesliga). Last month: 4th
Looked good on the ball but struggled for chances after coming off the bench for his debut in a 3-0 loss to Schalke 04. Recorded his first goal from the penalty spot in his third match as Werder recorded a 2-1 victory over Johnson’s hapless Mönchengladbach. Still settling in, he should become more consistent as the season takes off.Looked good on the ball but struggled for chances after coming off the bench for his debut in a 3-0 loss to Schalke 04. 5) Brad Guzan, Aston Villa (Premier League). Last month: 3rd5) Brad Guzan, Aston Villa (Premier League). Last month: 3rd
Whether it’s donning the American colors or those of Aston Villa, Guzan can’t seem to stop picking the ball out of the back of the net, despite his best efforts. In his last five games in all competitions he’s allowed 10 goals. Guzan was the lone bright spot against Brazil but he will endure heavy competition from an improving Howard going forward.Whether it’s donning the American colors or those of Aston Villa, Guzan can’t seem to stop picking the ball out of the back of the net, despite his best efforts. Bedoya’s proposed move to the Philadelphia Union fell apart at the last minute after Nantes declined the $1.2 million offer. The relationship between Bedoya and Nantes has been rocky as of late. The midfielder was highly critical of Nantes’ medical staff for what he deems to be their slow diagnosis of the knee injury that kept him out of action earlier in the summer. After recording a DNP and 23 minutes off the bench in Nantes first couple Ligue 1 fixtures, he returned to the starting lineup logging 90 minutes against Bordeaux.Bedoya’s proposed move to the Philadelphia Union fell apart at the last minute after Nantes declined the $1.2 million offer. Despite the call Wooten will still have to wait for his debut and instead returns to Germany hoping to keep up his impressive early season form. With five goals to his name Wooten is tied for top scorer in the division but he’s struggled to find the net in Sandhausen’s last two encounters.Wooten started the season in fine form banging in the goals in Germany’s second tier and eventually earning himself a call from Klinsmann to join the national team. Williams has been a staple in the center of the Reading midfield consistently logging a full 90 minutes for the club. Off to Sunderland on loan, Yedlin is set to finally get more playing time in the Premier League. Frankly it would be hard not to – prior to the move Yedlin had yet to record a single appearance for Tottenham this campaign. This move could be massive for Yedlin who is still struggling to find his true position. After a stop-start career in England some consistent playing time should do him well.Off to Sunderland on loan, Yedlin is set to finally get more playing time in the Premier League. It’s been a tough couple of months for Chandler.
