A five-year-old boy has died after a car crash on a main route into Cardiff.

Emergency services said they cut free five adults and two children following the three-car crash in Western Avenue.

The boy was taken to the University Hospital of Wales but later died. Those taken to hospital, including a two-year-old girl, are described as being in a critical condition by police.

Motorists have been warned of "significant" delays on the road, and diversions are in place.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene, along with police and fire crews.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has warned people not to attend University of Wales Hospital unless needed.

It tweeted: "The emergency unit at UHW is busy treating those injured in today's serious crash. Please think carefully before attending."

South Wales Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash.
