Piñatas are believed to have originated in China where figures of bulls and other animals were covered with paper and filled with seeds before they were struck with a stick to release the seeds. From there, they spread to Italy and then Spain, where clay pots and ribbons were used. Finally, they were brought to the New World by missionaries to help teach religion and they were filled with sweets. | |
