Mr Trump, who has gone from being considered a clear outsider in the race for the presidential nomination to a frontrunner, was the main target from his 11 outsiders, with many questioning his trustworthiness to be responsible for nuclear weapons.
The billionaire took centre-stage at the main debate at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.
Carly Fiorina, the only woman in the Republican field, was a notable addition to the first debate's line-up and many commentators praised her performance against the 10 men.
Four candidates lagging behind in national polls did not qualify for the main event and earlier took part in a second debate.
