Hillary Clinton on the Tonight Show: do you really want the Trump House?
Version 0 of 1. Hillary Clinton took several swipes at the Republican frontrunner Donald Trump as she appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In a segment recorded shortly before the first of the evening’s marathon GOP debates began on Wednesday night, Fallon – in a Trump wig and costume – asked Clinton: “Mr Trump insults and dismisses women. What would you do?” Related: Carly Fiorina dominates turbulent Republican debate as Trump fends off attacks “I’ve spent my entire career fighting for womens’ rights,” Clinton replied, to cheers from the audience. “I pushed for equal pay in the workplace, reproductive rights, making affordable childcare a reality. That’s what I believe in, that’s what I’m fighting for.” She also poked a little fun at herself too. Fallon, in character as Trump, asked her: “Immigration: wall or giant wall?” “Come on, Donald,” Clinton replied. “America was built by people who came here and worked for a better life … do you have any idea what it’s like to work so hard for something, to be so close to getting it, then someone pops up and tries to take it away?” In case anyone had missed the joke, Fallon quipped back: “Are you talking about Bernie Sanders?” Later in the show, with Fallon out of his Trump costume, Clinton speculated on the future. “You could have the White House renamed the Trump House, you could have [Republican second-to-frontrunner] Dr [Ben] Carson doing surgery in the basement … “Imagine, you’re in the Kremlin, and someone comes in and says ‘Oh my god, what did President Trump say today?’” she said. “It might cause everyone else to calm down, because they don’t want it to be too excitable.” Later she jabbed at Trump again when Fallon asked if she was tough enough to be president. “Look you’ve gotta be a lot of different things to be a good president,” Clinton said. “You have to start by really understanding what people are going through, understanding how you can help everyone have a better shot. That’s my mission as president. But there are problems in the world, people who don’t agree with us. You have to be prepared to do it in a smart way. Not bullying but a little more diplomatic.” “But speaking of Trump … ” Fallon interjected, grinning. Fallon also briefly pressed the former secretary of state on the scandal about her emails. Asked what was in the emails in question, Clinton joked: “A lot of misspellings. “There are thousands of them that are already out there,” she continued. “Most people have got bored after reading 10 or 12 because they’re boring.” Clinton said she was taking “as much responsibility as possible” for the error but claimed that none of the emails had been classified at the time. “It’s all retro-active. Sometimes government agencies disagree over what was classified … it wasn’t at the time and the stuff thats in it is really boring people.” Then Fallon moved on to a question about Kim Kardashian and selfies. |
