A woman has been jailed for causing a car crash which resulted in another woman suffering a miscarriage.

Kirsty Knight, 30, lost control of her car when overtaking and crashed into Rebecca Taylor's car near Redruth, Cornwall, Truro Crown Court heard.

Miss Taylor has been left with severe disabilities and had a miscarriage "as a direct result" of the crash.

Knight was jailed for 16 months, having been found guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

'Tragic outcome'

Sentencing, Judge Christopher Harvey Clark said: "Rebecca Taylor underwent six operations on her legs which were badly fractured and she is left with permanent severe disabilities."

The judge said "in all probability" Miss Taylor, 27, suffered a miscarriage "as a direct result" of Knight's driving.

"That was a tragic outcome which will doubtless haunt her for the rest of her life," said the judge.

The court heard Knight was driving on the A3047 at about 08:00 GMT on 7 February 2014 when she misjudged an overtaking manoeuvre and lost control of her car.

In mitigation, Barry White told the court the incident was "an aberration" for Knight, a married mother, who did not have any previous convictions or points on her licence.

The judge disqualified Knight from driving for three years and ordered an extended driving test before she could get her licence back.

Speaking outside the court, Phil Silvio, a family friend of Miss Taylor, said: "Any prison sentence can't change what has happened or the effect it has had on Rebecca."
