Yet if we are honest, we know how easy this spirit of generous self-sacrifice can be dampened. There are a couple of ways that this can happen. We can get caught up mentioning the value of our apostolic works by the standards of efficiency, good management and outward success which govern the business world. Not that these things are unimportant - we have been entrusted with a great responsibility and God’s people rightly expect accountability from us.We can get caught up mentioning the value of our apostolic works by the standards of efficiency, good management and outward success which govern the business world. But the true worth of our apostolate is measured by the value it has in God’s eyes. To see and evaluate things from God’s perspection calls for constant conversation … and need I say, great humility. But the true worth of our apostolate is measured by the value it has in God’s eyes. Pope Francis prays for those who died in Mecca during the Hajj stampede

Do the liturgies seem over the top for a pope who likes simplicity? #PopeFrancis
It’s something I’ve been wondering about since the pope arrived in the US. I think he genuinely enjoyed the music and dance in Cuba, but has often appeared bored and listless during these gargantuan American liturgies.
I suspect that the scale of all this is to remind the pope that while his concerns are with the Global South, North America is a centre of Catholicism that has its own gifts (many of them financial).
