Det Ch Insp Mick Graham, of Northamptonshire Police, said: "Fortunately, incidents of this nature are incredibly rare, and I would appeal to the public to contact us if they know anything about Mr Brickwood's death, or what may have happened in the hours leading up to this incident." Dozens of people have paid tribute to Mr Brickwood on social media, describing him as "a caring and lovable chatty guy", a "true hardworking gent" and a "legend of Abington".
His tribute pages on Facebook refer to his killer as "disgusting" and "scum".
