The Obama-Putin summit: Arguably the most critical, and least predictable, meeting of the ‘high-level week’ is expected later on Monday, when the US and Russian leaders talk face-to-face for the first time in ten months. The edginess of the encounter is illustrated by the fact that both sides deny having asked for it. Probably after 5pm on Monday. The Obama-Putin summit: Arguably the most critical, and least predictable, meeting of the ‘high-level week’ is expected later on Monday, when the US and Russian leaders talk face-to-face for the first time in ten months. Anti-Isis summit: Obama will host a leaders’ session on how to defeat the Islamic State and other violent extremists on Tuesday. The leaders will have to confront the failure of their efforts, pledged at last year’s Unga, to stem the flow of foreign fighters, and to respond to Isis’s web-driven global recruitment drive. Putin and Rouhani are expected to be among notable absentees. 10.30am–2pm on Tuesday. France urges suspension of veto powers: On Wednesday morning, Fabius will host a ministerial meeting to press Paris’s proposal that the five permanent members of the UN security council should suspend their veto rights in situations where genocide and other mass atrocities are happening. It is unlikely to get very far in the face of adamant Russian opposition, but Paris is looking for widespread support in the general assembly with the aim of isolating Moscow on the issue. 11am on Wednesday.France urges suspension of veto powers: On Wednesday morning, Fabius will host a ministerial meeting to press Paris’s proposal that the five permanent members of the UN security council should suspend their veto rights in situations where genocide and other mass atrocities are happening.
