India officials say no-one missing in Assam boat capsize
(about 9 hours later) | |
Officials in India say there have been no complaints of anyone missing after an overcrowded boat capsized in the north-eastern state of Assam.
Initially it was feared that as many as 50 people may have drowned in the incident in Kamrup district.
Senior official Vinod Seshan, who is overseeing rescue operations, told BBC Hindi they found no bodies.
The motorised boat sank on the Kolohi river. Those on board were on their way to a boat race.
Many of the at least 150 passengers on board managed to swim to safety against strong river currents, reports said.
Mr Seshan said rescue operations would continue for a further 12 hours, in case any bodies surfaced later.
However, he said it was "very unusual" that no "missing person complaints" had been filed in the nearby police stations.
The Kolohi is a tributary of the Brahmaputra river, which has been flowing much faster than usual because of recent monsoon rains.
The boat sank in a part of the river not far from the state's main city of Guwahati. |
