A third-grade student at a Baltimore City elementary school who fell in a hallway last week has died, according to Baltimore City Public Schools.

Baltimore City schools spokeswoman Edie House Foster identified the student as Darius Clark, a third-grader at Gwynns Falls Elementary in west Baltimore.

School system officials said that Darius fell in a hallway at about 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, and was taken to the school’s health office before being taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Hospital. The student died Tuesday night, according to a city schools statement Wednesday.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that late last evening, our student passed away,” the statement said. “Our deepest thoughts and concerns are with the family and the entire Gwynns Falls school community at this time.”

Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith said homicide detectives began investigating the 9-year-old’s death Tuesday and found that he “suffered a traumatic head injury as a result of a fall.”

“At this time, this incident appears to be a tragic accident,” Smith said in a statement, adding that the medical examiner’s office will make the final determination regarding the cause and manner of Darius’s death.

Gwynns Falls Elementary serves more than 420 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the school’s Web site.

The school system did not provide any additional information about the student in the statement, and Foster said no further information was available late Wednesday afternoon.
