(34 minutes later)
The Conservative Party is set to announce its chosen candidate to contest the 2016 London mayoral election. Zac Goldsmith will contest the 2016 London mayoral election for the Conservatives, it has been announced.
Richmond Park and North Kingston MP Zac Goldsmith, London Assembly Member Andrew Boff, MEP Syed Kamall and London's deputy mayor for crime and policing Stephen Greenhalgh are vying to take on Labour's Sadiq Khan. The Richmond Park and North Kingston MP said he was "honoured" after winning 70% of the votes in an online primary election.
An announcement is due this morning. He beat London Assembly Member Andrew Boff, MEP Syed Kamall and London's deputy mayor for crime and policing Stephen Greenhalgh.
Mr Goldsmith is seen as the frontrunner to be the Conservative pick. A total of 9,227 votes were cast for the four candidates.
For £1, anyone on the electoral roll was able to register to vote to choose the candidate. Mr Goldsmith, who was the favourite for the nomination, had balloted his constituents to seek permission to stand.
