On Monday, it was announced the plant on Teesside was to be mothballed with the loss of 1,700 jobs. | |
The director of the SSI UK, Cornelius Louwrens, said he would try to determine how operations would be affected, but there would be a focus on keeping the coke ovens burning. | |
A taskforce was set up to support workers after the mothballing announcement and it was meeting when news of the liquidation emerged. | |
Middlesbrough South Labour MP Tom Blenkinsop, who was attending, said: "Our thoughts and heartfelt feelings go out to every worker and their families at this time, during the obvious pain and disappointment they will be feeling." | |
The GMB union said it was seeking to establish what liquidation would mean for the future of the workers. | |
Roy Rickhuss, general secretary of the Community union, described it as devastating news for the workforce, their families and the community. | |
"We will be taking steps to ensure our members' interests are represented through this process and putting claims forward for what they are owed," he said. |
