Version 0 of 1.

The man shot by Prince William County police last week was identified Friday as Jonathan Alexander Diaz-Chavez, 22, and police said an assault charge had been filed against him.

Police also said in a statement that the county prosecutor had determined that officers who shot the man had been in reasonable fear of death or serious bodily harm.

The incident began about 2 p.m. in Manassas when a homeowner reported a suspicious person in her Lake Drive yard. Officers found a man lying in a grassy area and suspected that he might have been a burglar, police said.

At some point, the man raised a crowbar towards the officers in a “threatening manner” and made verbal threats, police said. They said he failed to heed commands to drop the crowbar.

During a foot chase into Fairfax County, police said, the man again raised the crowbar and was shot.

After hospital treatment he was taken to the county adult detention center, police said.

They said Diaz-Chavez was charged with a single count of attempted aggravated malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer
