Victim from triple shooting in Northeast D.C. identified
Version 0 of 1. The man fatally shot early Saturday in Northeast Washington was attempting to rob four other men, and a violent struggle for the gun resulted in his death and injuries to two others, according to police sources. Jerome Leroy Wright, 32, died at the scene of the shooting in the 700 block of H Street NE, officials said. Wright, of Northeast, was briefly a fugitive last month after he escaped police custody at the same intersection. He had been facing drug charges. During the robbery attempt shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, one man who had been targeted by Wright fought back, and in the struggle for the gun, was shot in the chest, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The man then gained control of the gun and shot Wright several times in the chest, according to the official. Police officers who were patrolling a nearby Howard University homecoming event responded to the scene and unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate Wright. The man who had been shot in the chest, along with another man who had inadvertently been shot, were transported to local hospitals, police said in a statement. The shooting of Wright will most likely be ruled a justifiable homicide, an official said, and the man who shot Wright likely will not face charges. |
