Man charged with breaking into rooms at Washington Hilton hotel

A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with breaking into rooms at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Dupont Circle and stealing money, credit cards and other items from patrons as they slept, according to D.C. police. Kevin Lorenzo McCummons, who has addresses in Northwest and Southeast Washington, was detained by hotel security guards on Friday after police said he got into a ninth floor room and woke a woman. Police said she screamed “Excuse me,” and the man ran out of the room with her purse. Police did not say how the burglar gained entry to the rooms. D.C. police said McCummons was charged with multiple counts of burglary, unlawful entry, theft and credit card fraud. He was detained at an initial appearance in D.C. Superior Court on Saturday and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday. A police arrest affidavit says the incidents began Sept. 22 when a patron complained that someone had broken into a room at the Hilton, in the 1900 block of Connecticut Ave. NW, and took wallets, credit cards, money, a watch and a LeapPad tablet. The affidavit says that the next day, hotel security reviewed surveillance video and saw the suspect and identified him as a man who had been barred from the hotel in January. On Sept. 24, police said the suspect used a card stolen on Sept. 22 in a cafeteria at George Washington Hospital, and then again on Sept. 30 at a CVS store. Police said officers were called to the Washington Hilton on Friday for another burglary. This time, police said, a woman screamed after someone got into her ninth floor room and grabbed her purse. Police said hotel security captured the suspect on a terrace level staircase. The affidavit says he was carrying a black backpack and had seven credit cards in the name of the hotel patron. |
