Chris Evans has revealed that the new look Top Gear will return to the BBC in May with its biggest-ever run of 16 episodes across two series – and admitted he may not stick to the three-presenter format for every show.

Top Gear has traditionally aired two series a year at six episodes each, although the last run was just 10 episodes.

The BBC Radio 2 and TFI Friday presenter, speaking in interviews at the annual Mipcom TV trade show in Cannes, suggested that he didn’t want to try and ape the successful co-presenting “Bee Gees” buddy act perfected by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

“We are going to do things differently, because we have to, we want to,” he said. “They were brilliant at it, I’m not going to do that. They’re the Three Stooges, they are the Bee Gees, they are and I’m not, I’m me. I’m on my own, so do I form a band or not?”

There is also a suggestion that Evans is keen to introduce a live studio element, a style of broadcasting he is comfortable with given his experience on shows such as Channel 4’s TFI Friday and The Big Breakfast.
