A British man has drowned in Salou after reportedly going into the sea despite warnings, becoming the third Briton to die in similar circumstances in Spanish waters in less than a week.

The 48-year-old man, who has yet to be named, was with his family at Llevant beach in the north-eastern resort on Tuesday when he waded into the sea despite red flags flying to warn bathers of strong currents and rough seas, according to local media.

His wife raised the alarm at 11.50am and lifeguards recovered his body at about noon. There was no chance of reviving him, authorities told Diari de Tarragona.

The victim was reportedly wearing a bumbag containing money and travel documents when he was found.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Salou, Spain, on 6 October. We are providing support to the family at this difficult time.”

Last week two women from Birmingham were swept out to sea while on holiday in Lloret de Mar, a popular resort on the Costa Brava.

One of the women was reportedly trying to rescue her friend after she got into difficulty. Another woman made it back to shore. Police said they had ignored warnings not to go into the sea.

Early on Tuesday a Lithuanian woman drowned off the same beach in Lloret de Mar. No warnings were in place at the time.
