A mother and her 2-year-old son were struck by a hit-and-run driver in Woodbridge on Tuesday, Prince William County police said, and a man was arrested soon after.

The 30-year-old Woodbridge woman and the toddler were crossing Dale Boulevard at Cloverdale Road at 7:44 a.m. on Tuesday. Police said in a statement that the woman and child were in a crosswalk, and that their “walk” sign was on.

Police said Lawrence P. Friason, who was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, turned right from Cloverdale Road and hit them both. Friason then sped away, police said.

An off-duty Fairfax County police detective who happened to be at the scene followed Friason, helping Prince William officers to catch up to him and arrest him.

Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said that the mother and child’s injuries were not serious.

Friason, 33, of Woodbridge turned out to be driving on a suspended license, police said.
