The old city at the moment is under very, very high security. There have been metal detectors installed at the different old city gates. In the city at the moment, there are a lot of barriers but it’s quiet at the moment. The restrictions at the al-Aqsa mosque mean no Muslim men under the age of 45 are allowed in. Quite a lot of people haven’t been allowed to come in. Usually when security is high, violence is less likely but there’s a sense that everyone is waiting to see what will happen. The old city at the moment is under very, very high security. The comments coming out of the Israeli president, Binyamin Netanyahu’s office and that of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, they have said they do not want any sort of escalation [of the violence] but it’s not completely clear they are leading the demonstrations or in control of what’s happening on the ground.
