Two men, one a garda officer, have been shot dead at a house in Ireland. Gardai said a woman was also seriously injured in the gun attack which occurred at a home near Omeath, Co Louth at about 6pm on Sunday. | |
The shooting incident took place on the Cooley peninsula near Carlingford, a beauty spot in Co Louth close to South Armagh. | |
The murdered police officer was a married man in his 30s and had three children.It is understood the fatal shooting happened after gardai arrived at a domestic dispute. | |
The injured woman was taken to a local hospital and is said to be in a stable condition. | |
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has been called in to assist the Garda investigation and have sealed off a property across the border in Newry, Co Armagh. | |
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, who represents the Louth constituency, expressed shock at the news. | |
“I am shocked at the news that three people, including a member of An Garda Siochana have died in a shooting incident in Omeath this evening,” he said. “My thoughts and sympathies are with the families of those who have died.” | |

This is the second time in two years that a member of Ireland’s police force has been killed on duty in Co Louth. | |
In 2013, garda Adrian Donohoe was shot dead during an armed robbery of a rural Credit Union in North Louth. His killers fled across the border into Northern Ireland with some of them eventually fleeing to the United States. |
