Three people shot in County Louth, Ireland Two people shot dead in Co Louth, Ireland
(35 minutes later)
Three people, including a garda, have been shot in County Louth in Ireland, Gardai said. Two men, one a garda officer, have been shot dead at a house in Ireland. Gardai said a woman was also seriously injured in the gun attack which occurred at a home near Omeath, Co Louth at about 6pm on Sunday.
The incident happened at 6pm at a house in an area known as the Bush in the Carlingford area. The shooting incident took place on the Cooley peninsula near Carlingford, a beauty spot in Co Louth close to South Armagh.
There were unconfirmed reports that the three people shot were killed. The murdered police officer was a married man in his 30s and had three children. It is understood the fatal shooting happened after gardai arrived at a domestic dispute.
The shooting occurred in the same county where Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was fatally shot on 25 January 2013. The injured woman was taken to a local hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.
It is understood gardai were responding to reports of a domestic incident. The Police Service of Northern Ireland has been called in to assist the Garda investigation and have sealed off a property across the border in Newry, Co Armagh.
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, who represents the Louth constituency, expressed shock at the news.
“I am shocked at the news that three people, including a member of An Garda Siochana have died in a shooting incident in Omeath this evening,” he said. “My thoughts and sympathies are with the families of those who have died.”
Niall Collins, justice spokesman for the main opposition party in Ireland, Fianna Fail, said: “Obviously details of this incident are still emerging but I am extremely shocked to hear that a member of An Garda Siochana has been killed tonight
Collins offered condolences to family, colleagues and Garda commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan.
This is the second time in two years that a member of Ireland’s police force has been killed on duty in Co Louth.
In 2013, garda Adrian Donohoe was shot dead during an armed robbery of a rural Credit Union in North Louth. His killers fled across the border into Northern Ireland with some of them eventually fleeing to the United States.
