Firefighters work through night to contain blaze in Melbourne scrapyard
Version 0 of 1. Firefighters have worked through the night to contain a major fire in a Melbourne metal recycling yard. Residents in a wide area across the city’s west were warned to stay indoors to avoid contact with toxic smoke billowing from the blaze, which erupted at Sims Metal in Brooklyn about 4.40pm on Monday. The fire remained out of control well into the night. The metropolitan fire brigade issued a watch and act message, warning residents of Altona Gate, Braybrook, Sunshine, Sunshine West, Tottenham and West Footscray to avoid going outdoors, shut their windows and turn off air-conditioning because of the smoke. The fire is in a large pile of metal that includes car bodies and discarded gas cylinders. A crane and excavator pulled apart the smouldering scrap pile to allow fire crews to get to the seat of the blaze. Its cause is not yet known. |
