A Leesburg man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he killed his 9-month-old daughter a year ago.

Devyn Ellis died of a severe head injury Oct. 5, 2014. On Monday, a grand jury in Loudoun County indicted her father, Diamante Travon Ellis, 23, on charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse.

The Leesburg police department said in a statement Wednesday, shortly after Ellis was arrested and held without bond, that Devyn was first hospitalized in Loudoun on Oct. 2. She was transported to Children’s Hospital in the District the next day, where doctors called police to say that her injuries suggested that she had been abused.

She died two days later. Leesburg police spokesman Jeff Dubé declined to elaborate on how she was injured.

Dubé said that Ellis was considered a person of interest from the time his daughter died, but the D.C. medical examiner’s office took almost a year to send its report to Loudoun so Ellis could be charged.
