D.C. man is accused of punching Metro transit police officer
Version 0 of 1. A 19-year-old man who was in a release program as he awaited sentencing for assaulting a 69-year-old man at a Metro station has been arrested again and is charged with punching a transit police officer six times in the face. Elijah Jeremiah Smith of Northeast Washington was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday for an April incident in which an elderly man was assaulted on an escalator at the Eastern Market station. The latest incident occurred Tuesday about 8:30 p.m. near a Metro bus stop in the 700 block of Seventh Street NW. A transit officer in plainclothes was helping another officer secure a prisoner when Smith allegedly approached them. He tried to talk to the person who was being arrested, police said in their report, and he was interfering with the investigation. Smith cursed at the officers and then punched one of them, authorities said. — Dana Hedgpeth Someone shot 150 birds in one night outside a Baltimore-area office building. Maryland Natural Resources Police are trying to determine who committed the bizarre massacre, which is a crime under state and federal animal protection laws. Candy Thomson, a police spokeswoman, said workers at an office building off Reisterstown Road in Pikesville saw nothing amiss when they left Sept. 29. When they returned to work the next morning, 150 robins were dead on the lawn. Thomson said that robins congregate in large numbers as fall begins, so they were all probably in the trees on the property where they were shot. — Julie Zauzmer A woman walking to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station was fatally hit by a car Wednesday morning. Fairfax County police said Silvia Raquel Corella Erazo, 72, of Reston, was trying to cross Wiehle Avenue to get to the station when she was hit by a 2005 Honda Accord, about 6:25 a.m. The 30-year-old driver was also headed toward the Metro station, police said. He was not drunk or speeding, authorities said, and he stayed at the scene of the crash. The road has no crosswalk at the spot where the collision happened. — Julie Zauzmer |
