Version 0 of 1.

Police have identified a 95-year-old Bethesda woman who was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing River Road near Kenwood Golf & Country Club in Bethesda.

Margaret McDowell Wydro of the 6000 block of Springfield Drive was crossing at Springfield Drive around 7 p.m. Wednesday in a marked crosswalk, police said, when she was hit by a 2007 BMW 335i that was headed east on River Road.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is under investigation. Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

Friends said Wydro lived alone and was a friendly and kind person who stayed active in the community. She was involved in a local dance group for senior citizens called Quicksilver. And she was known for showing how she could get down — and up — from doing the splits.

Friends said Wydro also frequented the private Kenwood Club several times a week for duckpin bowling, bridge games or lunch. The country club was a short walk from her home, friends said, and Wydro often walked there alone.

On the evening she was hit, Wydro’s friend Cathy Bower, who works at the club’s front desk, said Wydro was headed to the club for one of her weekly bowling sessions with a league.

“My last words to her were ‘Marge, be careful on your way home,’ ” Bower recalled Thursday.

Bower said Wydro responded in her usual way: “ ‘Oh, I always am.’ ”
