BBC radio station invites 95-year-old caller who 'missed his wife' for coffee

A local radio station might just be first in line for a Good Samaritan award after inviting a pensioner into the studio for coffee because he was feeling lonely. 95-year-old 'Bill' from Southampton called BBC Radio Solent during Alex Dyke's mid-morning show last week, after his wife was taken into a nursing home. The pair had been friends for 30 years before they wed last year, and Bill admitted he was "missing her" following her admission to the home after a bad fall. He said that he visited her every day, BuzzFeed reported. On hearing his story, the team organised for a taxi to pick Bill up and bring him to the studio - where he became an honorary 'special guest' and even fielded calls from smitten listeners. The show's producer Chris Hitchings told BuzzFeed News: "He called up to say he was lonely and he missed [his wife]. I don’t think he had anyone else to talk to. He's such a nice guy and was lovely." |
