David Cameron treated Xi Jinping to some British hospitality when he took him to his local for a pint.

The Chinese president revealed he was keen to try some traditional ale during his state visit to the UK and the prime minister obliged.

Watched on by regulars in The Plough at Cadsden, a few minutes away from Cameron’s countryside residence of Chequers, the pair tucked into a basket of mini fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce washed down by a pint of Greene King IPA.

The village pub is a favourite of Cameron’s and the two men chatted to regulars during the 20 minute visit before a formal dinner with their wives.

The prime minister, who famously once left daughter Nancy behind at The Plough after an afternoon out, joked with locals about the incident. “I’ve been in here a few times,” he said. “I’m not leaving my family here today.”

Earlier, the leaders met at Chequers where Cameron took the president for a walk round the grounds.

The pair then headed inside for an hour long meeting that focused on international affairs and China’s role on the world stage.
