Robbery victim tackles suspect near Capitol Hill
Version 0 of 1. A robbery victim tackled a suspect Friday night on the outskirts of the Capitol Hill area after his property was taken in what appeared to be an armed holdup, D.C. police said. The victim was approached about 9:20 p.m. in the 900 block of New Jersey Avenue SE, and the incident was seen by an off-duty D.C. police officer who immediately called for help, police said. When the suspect tried to leave the area, police said, the victim made his move. Officers intervened, and the suspect was arrested. All of the victim’s property was recovered, police said. They also said they found an “imitation pistol.” The matter was being reviewed Saturday to determine whether the holdup was connected to a recent rash of robberies in the Capitol Hill area, authorities said. Two of those robberies, both of which occurred Wednesday night, were within two or three blocks of the site of Friday’s incident. — Martin Weil The Prince George’s County Fire Department said a working smoke alarm saved a Landover Hills family from an early-morning fire on Saturday. Fire officials said unattended cooking was the cause of the blaze, which started around 3:30 a.m. in the one-story home in the 6800 block of Farragut Street. Officials said a working smoke detector awoke the family and allowed them to escape before firefighters arrived. One firefighter sustained injuries that were not life-threatening while battling the blaze. The fire caused about $100,000 in damages. Separately, firefighters and officials in Bowie went door-to-door Saturday to check residences for working smoke alarms. Fire officials said if they find a home without a smoke detector or with a smoke detector that is older than 10 years, officials will install a new model that was donated by Lowe’s Home Improvement of Bowie. — Keith L.
