Two juveniles who allegedly planned violence against students and staff of a Virginia high school have been arrested, the Spotslvania County sheriff’s office said.

Sheriff Roger L. Harris said the threat was defused long before it had a chance to endanger students and staff at Riverbend High School.

The sheriff’s office said Saturday that the alleged plot involved calling in a bomb threat to the school, then shooting at students and staff as they evacuated.

It appeared that authorities began investigating after messages began turning up on social media.

In a message to school parents, Riverbend principal Troy Wright said the school administration became aware earlier this month through “off-campus electronic means” of threats against the school. Subsequent investigation turned up information about a plan to carry out the threats, he wrote.

In his message, Wright commended those who alerted the school administration about social media postings. The alerts made it possible for authorities to determine who was allegedly responsible, the principal wrote.
