Turkey says nine dead in clash with Isis suspects

Turkish police say they have raided a house used by a suspected Islamic State cell in the south-east of the country, triggering a clash that killed up to seven militants and two police officers, according to local media. The state-run Anadolu agency said two police officers were killed by booby-trap bombs during the operation in the city of Diyarbakır. Four other officers were injured. Anadolu did not give a figure for the number of militants who died, but the Dogan news agency said seven were killed in a shootout while three others were arrested. It was not immediately clear if the operation was linked to the suicide bombings of a peace rally in the capital Ankara this month that killed 102 people. One of the bombers was identified by Turkish authorities as an Isis militant. Armoured police vehicles sealed off a road where police launched the raid, Dogan video footage showed. Heavy gunfire could be heard. Tensions are running high in Turkey just six days before elections following this month’s bomb attack and a resurgence of the Kurdish conflict. |
