Northampton Town Football Club chair agrees to sale Northampton footballers 'will not be paid on time' warning
(35 minutes later)
Struggling Northampton Town Football Club is set to be sold to the former boss of Oxford United. Financial problems at Northampton Town Football Club mean there is "every chance" players and staff will not get paid on time.
The news of the sale by Northampton chairman David Cardoza to Kelvin Thomas - chairman of Oxford between 2008 and 2012 - emerged at a meeting on Monday. Chief executive James Whiting said he expected salaries to be paid eventually - but not by Friday, after the club's bank account was frozen.
But the sale is only expected to be confirmed if Mr Thomas can do a deal with Northampton Borough Council over an unpaid £10.25m loan. The news came as it emerged chairman David Cardoza plans to sell the club to ex-Oxford United boss Kelvin Thomas.
The Cobblers borrowed cash to fund a redevelopment of its Sixfields ground. The club owes Northampton Council £10m, loaned to fund a ground redevelopment.
Mr Whiting said the sale would only go through if Mr Thomas was able to do a deal with the council over the £10.25m loan, which was to have been used to redevelop the club's Sixfields ground.
A winding-up petition has been sought by HM Revenue & Customs, to whom Mr Whiting says the club owes £166,000.A winding-up petition has been sought by HM Revenue & Customs, to whom Mr Whiting says the club owes £166,000.
