• They were called the Dave Clark Five but the vocalist was Mike Smith (Clark was the drummer). He also played keyboards and co-wrote hits including Glad All Over and Bits and Pieces, which became huge hits on both sides of the Atlantic. The band were part of the British Invasion of America by pop and rock 'n' roll outfits in the early 1960s, and rivalled The Beatles before The Rolling Stones came along. Smith, Clark et al even knocked the Fab Four off the top of the charts with Glad All over. | • They were called the Dave Clark Five but the vocalist was Mike Smith (Clark was the drummer). War hero who gave back her award, Pearl Cornioley• Someone else whose own name was little known was Pearl Cornioley. Born Pearl Witherington in Paris to British parents, she was a secret service agent in World War II, know by the names Marie and Pauline. She was parachuted into occupied France, and played so vital a role in organising the French Resistance that the Nazis put a one million franc bounty on her head. After the war Witherington was ineligible for the Military Cross, for which she had been recommended, because she was a woman. She returned the MBE she was awarded, pointing out that her service was military, not civil. She accepted a military MBE and later the CBE. | War hero who gave back her award, Pearl Cornioley• Someone else whose own name was little known was Pearl Cornioley. • Another woman encroaching on male territory was Sunny Lowry, the first female to swim the English Channel. It took her three attempts and in the end she completed the challenge in 15 hours and 41 minutes. She took her training regime seriously, eating a high protein diet including 40 eggs a week (consumed in omelettes). Lowry also made sure her swimsuit was conducive to swimming: she chose a light, two-piece costume instead of the more usual heavy wool one-piece of the time. But doing so led her to be branded a "harlot" for daring to bear her knees. | • Another woman encroaching on male territory was Sunny Lowry, the first female to swim the English Channel. Emily Perry (left) with Ozzy Osbourne and Dame Edna• Much more modestly-dressed was Emily Perry, better known as Madge Allsop, bridesmaid to housewife megastar, Dame Edna Everage. She began playing the silent role at the age of 80, sitting, long-sufferingly, as Dame Edna played it for laughs. Perry's mournful, lived-in face made her the perfect "straight man". She only spoke on one occasion, singing and dancing in a sketch for Comic Relief. | Emily Perry (left) with Ozzy Osbourne and Dame Edna• Much more modestly-dressed was Emily Perry, better known as Madge Allsop, bridesmaid to housewife megastar, Dame Edna Everage. • Much more vocal - and extendedly so - was the Italian singer Nunzio Gallo. He came sixth in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1957 with the longest song ever performed in the competition. Corde Della Mia Chitarra, which translates as Strings of My Guitar, was five minutes and nine seconds long. Organisers instituted a time limit (now three minutes) in response, for which many people will be thankful. | • Much more vocal - and extendedly so - was the Italian singer Nunzio Gallo. She seems to think that you fix a face the same way you fix a house Alec Wildenstein (inset) on his wife Jocelyn • The ex-husband of "the Bride of Wildenstein", Alec Wildenstein, was a billionaire international art dealer made famous by his tempestuous marriage and his wife's extraordinary cosmetic surgery. After he married Jocelyn, the couple became known for their lavish lifestyle and were reported to spend as much as a million dollars a month. Their marriage disintegrated among accusations of affairs and she turned to surgery - having several injections in her lips, cheeks and chin, as well as a facelift and eye reconstruction to make her look more feline. It's said she spent $4m on reconstructive surgery. In 2004 she was named the world's scariest celebrity by a plastic surgery website. | |
