Sophie ReVeal grimaced and placed a cold water bottle on her right cheek as she walked off the field. Although the Wilson junior notched the game’s first goal in the 19th minute and put pressure on the School Without Walls defense throughout the DCIAA girls’ soccer final, it was her right cheek that prevented a second-half scoring chance — and earned the praise of Coach Daniel Drickey.

“Way to save it with that face,” he told her.

ReVeal has a habit of making big plays against Walls. Saturday’s 4-0 win that gave the Tigers their seventh straight DCIAA title was no exception. ReVeal opened the scoring by taking a through ball from Lucy Kellogg and poking it into the near side of the net with her left foot.

“Everyone was just screaming at me to finish, so I just shot,” ReVeal said.

The goal marked the third consecutive year that the Wilson forward scored in a DCIAA championship against Walls.

“She works real hard, she puts her body on the line, and she does what needs to happen for the team, and today she got us a goal,” Drickey said. “She has a knack for popping up and getting us goals at the right time.”

Goalkeeper Asha Pappajohn kept Walls in the game with big saves in the first half against the No. 10 Tigers (12-0-5). Nicole Distinto gave Wilson a 2-0 cushion in the second half, scoring off a cross from Tosca DiBella. Bella Heffernan and Kellogg tacked on goals as the Tigers cruised at Spingarn High.

Bell came so close, so many times. Some shots were robbed by Cardozo goalkeeper Alexis Alvarez. Some hit the crossbar or went just over it. One shot, which came in the final seconds of regulation, was stuffed by defender Nelson Murillo.

But at the end of the first overtime period, the Griffins finally came through. In the 89th minute, Ismael Lopez sent a corner kick that deflected to Oscar Alvarenga, who headed the ball in for the game-winner. The junior’s goal gave Bell a 1-0 win and a second straight DCIAA title.

“I feel excited, ready to celebrate,” Alvarenga said.

As Bell (9-0-2) accepted its medals and posed for pictures with the championship trophy, some players sneaked behind Coach Victor Molina and emptied the cooler onto his head.

Led by its underclassmen, Glenelg Country won a second consecutive IAAM C Conference title and wrapped up an undefeated season with a 2-1 victory over Chapelgate.

St. Mary’s defeated St. Paul’s, 6-1, to win its second straight IAAM B Conference title. Maddie Byrne scored two goals.
