Hampton University student from Alexandria shot, killed in Norfolk
Version 0 of 1. A 20-year-old college student from the Washington area was shot to death early Saturday in Norfolk, authorities said. The Norfolk police identified the victim as Joseph Bose. He was a junior at Hampton University, where he was studying journalism, a campus spokeswoman said. He was shot near West 35th Street and Killam Avenue, in a residential area of Norfolk. The site is about a half-mile from Old Dominion University but about a dozen miles from the Hampton campus, which is across Hampton Roads from Norfolk. It was not immediately clear what Bose was doing, but Norfolk’s police chief said the shooting, and another killing that occurred in Norfolk about an hour earlier, apparently followed disputes. “In both instances — these cases started as arguments that ended in gunfire,” said chief Michael Goldsmith, who asked: “When did it become okay to solve a fight with a gun?” The chief said “I cannot fathom this inherent disregard for human life.” Bose’s family could not be reached immediately. But many friends expressed their sadness and dismay in Twitter messages. Bose was described as friendly, good-natured and fun-loving. He was also apparently a basketball player as a teenager in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. “One of the nicest people I’ve met,” read one tweet. Another began with the letters RIP and told Bose “you were one funny dude.” A third message told of attending church with him. Still another called him “a chill/funny guy” who “was doing big moves” at Hampton. |
