Speed and alcohol likely contributed to a fatal three-car crash in eastern Anne Arundel County late Saturday, that left two people dead and injured eight, police said Sunday.

Anne Arundel County police responded about 10:30 p.m. after two vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lanes of Solley Road near Chestnut Springs Lane in the Glen Burnie area. A third vehicle was unable to stop in time and also was involved in the crash.

Investigators believe the driver of a Nissan Maxima, 47-year-old Donna Thayer-Fitzergald, veered out of the southbound lane and into oncoming northbound traffic on the two-lane road, striking another Maxima driven by Joshua Pack, 18, and side-swiping a third vehicle.

Thayer-Fitzgerald of Glen Burnie, and Pack of Pasadena, Md., were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure.

Steven Fitzgerald, 53, a passenger in the first vehicle, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Four passengers in Pack’s car were also hurt with one, 17-year-old Nicholas Quigley, suffering life-threatening injuries.

Along with Quigley, Ryan Caines, 18, Dylan Dovel, 19, and 19-year-old Christopher Dumsha, all of Pasadena, were transported to Shock Trauma, Frashure said.

Passengers in the third vehicle, a Ford Focus, were transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The driver, 21-year-old Alexandra Thompson of Glen Burnie, and her two passengers Kasey Knighton, 18, of Pasadena and 18-year-old Kelcie Brown of Linthicum, Md., sustained minor injuries, according a statement.

Police said in that both speed and alcohol were “believed to be significant contributing factors,” and the investigation is ongoing.
