Version 0 of 1.

D.C. police are investigating fatal shootings that occurred Friday afternoon and early Saturday, two in a handful of violent incidents that occurred over the previous 24 hours in the city.

Charles Newell, 24, of Waldorf, Md., was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 3300 block of Blaine Street NE about 4 p.m. Friday, police said. Officers initially responded to investigate the sounds of gunshots in the area of the 4600 block of Hunt Place NE, which is about 2 miles away.

Officers then received information that Newell was on Blaine Street and went there. Newell was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrest has been made in the case.

The second fatal shooting occurred in the 1700 block of Eighth Street NW about 2:20 a.m. Saturday, police said. Officers heard gunshots in the area and, while responding, learned that an adult male victim had arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police identified him as Reginald Perry, 28, of Northwest. Police have not made an arrest in the case.

The District is dealing with an upswing in violence this year. The number of homicides in 2015 hit 139 with the latest killings — a 54 percent increase over the total at this time a year ago. D.C. police have not identified a single factor driving the spike, but they say repeat violent offenders are part of the problem.

Three stabbings also occurred overnight, with a total of four victims, police said. All the victims are expected to live.

Police apprehended a suspect in a stabbing that occurred in the 800 block of Southern Avenue SE about 2:10 a.m., police said. The second stabbing occurred about 2:40 a.m. in the 900 block of U Street NW. The third involved two adult male victims, who were stabbed in the 1300 block of U Street NW about 3 a.m.
