A search and rescue operation is under way after a car reportedly plunged into a river in Kendal, Cumbria.
Firefighters, police and rescue volunteers are searching both banks of the River Kent after the vehicle was apparently swept away.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man clinging to the roof of the car after it went into the river at Aynam Road at about 15:50 GMT.
Cumbria Fire Service said poor weather conditions were hampering the search.
Station manager Conrad Leather said the search by fire officers and volunteers had been "scaled back" because of heavy wind and rain and the coastguard had sent a helicopter to carry out aerial surveys.
The fire service has also set up a boom at Horse Bridge, but both the car and the man remain unaccounted for.
BBC Cumbria's Martin Lewes said rainfall had swollen the river. | BBC Cumbria's Martin Lewes said rainfall had swollen the river. |
He said the river could be up to 8ft (2.4m) deep in places and the search was moving downstream.
The reporter who is at the scene said: "The river is about as high it gets before people start to seriously worry about it.
"There is a mystery about how the car managed to leave the road which is a fairly straight road along the side of the river.
"And the mystery is where the car has got to and what's happened to the man who was seen with it and anyone else who was seen aboard." |
